There is no question that social media played a role in the siege and take-over of the US Capitol on January 6.

Since then there has been significant focus on the deplatforming of President Donald Trump. By all means the question of when to deplatform a head of state is a critical one, among many that must be addressed. When should platforms make these decisions? Is that decision-making power theirs alone?

But as reprehensible as the actions of Donald Trump are, the rampant use of the internet to foment violence and hate, and reinforce white supremacy is about more than any one personality. Donald Trump is certainly not the first politician to exploit the architecture of the internet in this way, and he won’t be the last. We need solutions that don’t start after untold damage has been done.

Changing these dangerous dynamics requires more than just the temporary silencing or permanent removal of bad actors from social media platforms.
Additional precise and specific actions must also be taken:  

Reveal who is paying for advertisements, how much they are paying and who is being targeted.

Commit to meaningful transparency of platform algorithms so we know how and what content is being amplified, to whom, and the associated impact.

Turn on by default the tools to amplify factual voices over disinformation.

Work with independent researchers to facilitate in-depth studies of the platforms’ impact on people and our societies, and what we can do to improve things.

These are actions the platforms can and should commit to today.

The answer is not to do away with the internet, but to build a better one that can withstand and gird against these types of challenges.

Ένα πολύ σημαντικό κενό ασφαλείας αποκαλύφθηκε πριν λίγες ημέρες.

Μερικές από τις εφαρμογές στο App Store για Mac, συλλέγουν κρυφά τα δεδομένα των χρηστών και τα ανεβάζουν σε Analytics Servers χωρίς την άδεια των ανυποψίαστων χρηστών.

Δημοφιλείς εφαρμογές όπως οι Dr. Unarchiver και Dr. Cleanerand, καθώς και άλλες εφαρμογές της εταιρείας ανάπτυξης "Trend Micro Inc.", συλλέγουν και ανεβάζουν πληροφορίες των χρηστών στους servers τους, από το ιστορικό των Safari, Google Chrome και Firefox.

Όλα αυτά μέσω πρόσβασης στον Φάκελλο του Χρήστη (macOS Home Directory).

Οι "πονηρές" αυτές εφαρμογές συλλέγουν δεδομένα κι από άλλα εγκατεστημένα apps εντός του συστήματος, στα οποία ξεκινάει η περισυλλογή μόλις τα εκκινήσετε, σύμφωνα με το 9to5Mac. Το πρόβλημα εντοπίστηκε αρχικά από χρήστη του Malwarebytes forum.

Οι αναφορές επιβεβαιώθηκαν από το 9to5Mac, όταν μετά από εγκατάσταση της εφαρμογής Dr. Unarchiver και σκαναρίσματος του home directory μέσω του "Quick Clean Junk Files", η εφαρμογή ξεκίνησε να συλλέγει σωρεία από περιττές πληροφορίες.

Αυτές περιείχαν δεδομένα από διάφορους browsers, αποκλειστικά αρχεία από πρόσφατα Google searches και έναν πλήρη κατάλογο από όλες τις εγκατεστημένες εφαρμογές που υπάρχουν στο σύστημα (συμπεριλαμβανομένων Code Signatures, εάν είναι ή όχι συμβατές με 64-bit και πληροφορίες σχετικά με το από που έγινε το download).

Κατά την διάρκεια της έρευνας, το Dr. Unarchiver ήταν η 12η δημοφιλέστερη εφαρμογή στο Αμερικάνικο Mac App Store, αλλά πλέον το έχουν αποσύρει από την αρχική σελίδα.

Ενώ το macOS Mojave έρχεται για να βελτιώσει την ασφάλεια σχετικά με τις εφαρμογές που έχουν πρόσβαση στο Home Directory, η διαδικασία ελέγχου του Store θα έπρεπε να είχε αντιληφθεί την συγκεκριμένη παραβίαση περί ασφάλειας του χρήστη και να μην είχε επιτρέψει την κυκλοφορία των εφαρμογών στο Mac App Store.

Επιπλέον τα νέα αυτά αμαυρώνουν την φήμη του Αμερικανικού κολοσσού, καθώς η Apple θα έπρεπε να παρέχει μεγαλύτερη ασφάλεια από την στιγμή που έχει πιο αυστηρή προσέγγιση σε ότι αφορά τις εφαρμογές, τουλάχιστον σε σύγκριση με την προσέγγιση της Google.

Τα νέα αυτά έρχονται μετά την αποκάλυψη πως μια άλλη διάσημη εφαρμογή του Apple Mac App Store, το Adware Doctor, ήταν τελικά ένα μυστικό spyware το οποίο έστελνε το ιστορικό του browser στην Κίνα.

Προτού αφαιρεθεί, το Adware Doctor (αξίας 4,99$) ήταν 5ο στην λίστα με τις επί πληρωμή εφαρμογές του App Store.

Η εφαρμογή είχε λάβει πάνω από 6000 βαθμολογήσεις 5 Αστέρων, αλλά είναι αμφίβολο κατά πόσο οι θετικές βαθμολογήσεις ήταν πραγματικές.

Ο μη κερδοσκοπικός οργανισμός Bluetooth Special Interest Group (BSIG), υπεύθυνος για την ανάπτυξη νέων προτύπων όσον αφορά την ασύρματη σύνδεση, ανακοίνωσε επίσημα την έκδοση 4.2 του προτύπου Bluetooth.

Το ενδιαφέρον στη νέα έκδοση είναι η δυνατότητα των συσκευών που το υποστηρίζουν να λαμβάνουν διεύθυνση IP.

Μακροπρόθεσμα αυτό σημαίνει πως οι λειτουργίες ενός σπιτιού θα είναι αυτοματοποιημένες και θα μπορεί να δοθεί πρόσβαση μέσω Διαδικτύου χωρίς τη χρήση μιας συσκευής διαμεσολαβητή, όπως για παράδειγμα το άναμμα και σβήσιμο των φώτων, του θερμοστάτη ή ακόμα και μιας πόρτας.

Σύμφωνα με το BSIG, το Bluetooth 4.2 θα επιτρέψει την ευκολότερη επικοινωνία μεταξύ των συσκευών και θα γίνει η βάση για το Internet of Things.

Εκτός των άλλων, η έκδοση 4.2 θα χρησιμοποιεί λιγότερη ενέργεια αλλά θα είναι πιο γρήγορη, επιτρέποντας τη μεταφορά δεδομένων μεταξύ δυο συσκευών στο μισό χρόνο που απαιτείται τώρα.

Επιπλέον, η ανίχνευση συσκευών μέσω του Bluetooth 4.2 θα είναι πιο δύσκολη, έως αδύνατη για τα καταστήματα που χρησιμοποιούν το iBeacon της Apple, εκτός και αν δοθεί άδεια να επικοινωνούν οι σταθμοί (beackons) με τις συσκευές των χρηστών.

Παρ'όλα αυτά, το ArsTechnica διευκρινίζει πως μερικές και όχι όλες οι λειτουργίες θα είναι διαθέσιμες σε παλαιότερες συσκευές ενώ εκπρόσωπος τύπου του BSIG αναφέρει πως για να λειτουργήσουν παλαιότερες συσκευές με τη νέα έκδοση 4.2 θα πρέπει να αναβαθμιστούν σε πιο πρόσφατο hardware.

Είναι γνωστό πως η Apple είναι αρκετά αυστηρή όσον αφορά τις εφαρμογές που θα φιλοξενεί στο λειτουργικό της σύστημα.

Εφαρμογές τρίτων, όπως οι περιηγητές Chrome ή Opera, είναι λειτουργικές σε iOS γιατί χρησιμοποιούν τη JavaScript και τις μηχανές αναζήτησης της Apple ή στην περίπτωση του Opera, επειδή επεξεργάζεται τα δεδομένα σε server και στη συνέχεια τα στέλνει στη συσκευή.

Εδώ και τουλάχιστον ένα χρόνο, η Mozilla αρνείται πεισματικά να κυκλοφορήσει έκδοση του Firefox για iOS, μιας και η Apple δεν επιτρέπει σε άλλες εφαρμογές να χρησιμοποιούν άλλη rendering μηχανή στην πλατφόρμα της πέρα του webkit. Με την αλλαγή CEO όμως και με τον Chris Beard επικεφαλή, φαίνεται πως η εταιρεία το ξανασκέφτεται.

Με αφορμή μια διοργάνωση σήμερα στο Portland των Η.Π.Α, η Mozilla αναφέρθηκε στην ανάγκη να γίνει διαθέσιμος ο Firefox σε iOS συσκευές.

Ο VP της Mozilla για το Firefox, Jonathan Nightingale, με ανάρτησή του στο Twitter επεσήμανε πως αυτό θα γίνει πραγματικότητα και θα υπάρξει περαιτέρω ενημέρωση, ενώ και η ίδια η εταιρεία ανακοίνωσε επίσημα πως δοκιμάζει τον Firefox για τη πλατφόρμα iOS.

Παρ'όλα αυτά, η Mozilla δεν έχει ξεκαθαρίσει πως θα φέρει τον Firefox στο iOS, αν και πολύ πιθανό να συνεργαστεί με τη τεχνολογία της Apple, οπότε και θα μπορεί να υποστηρίζει το συγχρονισμό μέσα από το λογαριασμό του Firefox.

Αξίζει να αναφέρουμε πως πριν αρκετό καιρό η Mozilla κυκλοφόρησε το Firefox Home για iOS ώστε οι χρήστες της να μπορούν να συγχρονίζουν τα δεδομένα τους σε οποιαδήποτε συσκευή χρησιμοποιούσαν, δυστυχώς όμως το όλο εγχείρημά της εγκαταλείφθηκε πριν περίπου 2 χρόνια.

Αρκετοί χρήστες συσκευών Android, χρησιμοποιούν το εργαλείο AirDroid για να μεταφέρουν αρχεία ή να έχουν πρόσβαση στα μηνύματα και στις επαφές που έχουν στο κινητό τους από το περιβάλλον χρήσης του web browser τους.

Η τελευταία αναβάθμιση φέρνει μία desktop εφαρμογή για Windows PC ή Mac που προσφέρει καλύτερο χειρισμό ειδοποιήσεων καθώς και τον εξ' αποστάσεως χειρισμό της συσκευής.

Η desktop εφαρμογή στην έκδοση 3 του AirDroid διαθέτει πιο καθαρό περιβάλλον χρήσης που επιτρέπει τις απλές μεταφορές αρχείων, το διάβασμα ή την δημιουργία μηνυμάτων κειμένου και τον έλεγχο των αρχείων καταγραφής τηλεφωνικών κλήσεων και των ειδοποιήσεων από όλες τις εφαρμογές, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και εκείνων που δεν υποστηρίζονται εγγενώς.

Αυτή όμως η έκδοση περιλαμβάνει και ένα χαρακτηριστικό με την ονομασία AirMirror, που επιτρέπει στον χρήστη να βλέπει ή να χειρίζεται την συσκευή Android που έχει στην κατοχή του απευθείας από το desktop, χρησιμοποιώντας το πληκτρολόγιο και το ποντίκι του.

Αυτό με λίγα λόγια σημαίνει ότι ο χρήστης μπορεί να απαντάει στα μηνύματα που δέχεται στο WhatsApp app από το PC του, χωρίς να χρειάζεται να σηκώσει το κινητό του από το γραφείο. Για να λειτουργήσει ωστόσο κάτι σαν το παραπάνω, ο χρήστης θα πρέπει να έχει κάνει "root" την συσκευή του.

Αν και αποτελεί σίγουρα ένα σημαντικό βήμα προς την σωστή κατεύθυνση, είναι πολλά ακόμη που πρέπει να γίνουν ώστε η desktop έκδοση του εργαλείο να φτάσει στο επίπεδο των χαρακτηριστικών και των δυνατοτήτων της αντίστοιχης web-based εφαρμογής, που επιτρέπει στους χρήστες την περιήγηση στους φακέλους και στα αρχεία τους, την χρήση της κάμερας, την λήψη screenshots, την αλλαγή ringtone κ.ά.

Η εφαρμογή είναι διαθέσιμη δωρεάν για Android από το Google Play store ενώ για τον δωρεάν επίσης desktop client θα χρειαστεί να επισκεφθείτε την επίσημη ιστοσελίδα του AirDroid για να τον κατεβάσετε.

Αν και είχε επισημανθεί ότι στοχεύει σε υπολογιστές Windows τελικώς το Regin έχει κατασκευαστεί για να καθιστά δυνατές και τις υποκλοπές και τις παρακολουθήσεις μέσω δικτύων GSM. Το Regin είναι ένα πραγματικό πολύ-εργαλείο για τον επιτιθέμενο.

Σύμφωνα με την εταιρεία Kaspersky, το Regin είναι η πρώτη πλατφόρμα ψηφιακών επιθέσεων που μπορεί να διαπερνά και να παρακολουθεί GSM δίκτυα, πραγματοποιώντας παράλληλα και άλλες "τυπικές" εργασίες κατασκοπείας. Οι επιτιθέμενοι πίσω από την πλατφόρμα έχουν παραβιάσει δίκτυα υπολογιστών σε τουλάχιστον 14 χώρες.

Την άνοιξη του 2012, οι ειδικοί της Kaspersky Lab αντιλήφθηκαν για πρώτη φορά το κακόβουλο λογισμικό Regin, το οποίο φαινόταν να είναι μέρος μιας περίπλοκης εκστρατείας κατασκοπείας. Εδώ και τρία σχεδόν χρόνια, ίχνη του κακόβουλου λογισμικού έχουν εντοπιστεί σε όλο τον κόσμο.

Κατά καιρούς, εμφανίζονταν δείγματα σε διάφορες multi-scanner υπηρεσίες, αλλά ήταν όλες άσχετες μεταξύ τους, με αινιγματική λειτουργικότητα και χωρίς συγκεκριμένο πλαίσιο. Ωστόσο, οι ειδικοί της Kaspersky Lab μπόρεσαν να απομονώσουν δείγματα που εμπλέκονταν σε διάφορες επιθέσεις, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και εκείνων κατά κυβερνητικών οργανισμών και παρόχων τηλεπικοινωνιών.

Τα δείγματα αυτά παρείχαν επαρκή πληροφόρηση ώστε να προχωρήσει μια πιο ενδελεχής έρευνα σχετικά με την απειλή αυτή.

Η μελέτη των ειδικών της εταιρείας διαπίστωσε ότι το Regin δεν είναι απλώς ένα κακόβουλο πρόγραμμα, αλλά μια πλατφόρμα, ένα πακέτο λογισμικού αποτελούμενο από πολλαπλές μονάδες, οι οποίες μπορούν να "μολύνουν" ολόκληρο το δίκτυο των στοχοποιημένων οργανισμών, για να αποκτήσουν πλήρη απομακρυσμένο έλεγχο σε κάθε επίπεδο που αυτό ήταν δυνατόν.

Σκοπός του Regin είναι η συγκέντρωση εμπιστευτικών δεδομένων μέσα από τα δίκτυα που δέχονται επίθεση και η εκτέλεση πολλών άλλων τύπων επιθέσεων.

Ο παράγοντας που βρίσκεται πίσω από την πλατφόρμα Regin διαθέτει μια πολύ καλά αναπτυγμένη μέθοδο για τον έλεγχο των δικτύων που έχουν "μολυνθεί".

Οι ειδικοί της Kaspersky Lab εντόπισαν αρκετούς οργανισμούς που βρίσκονταν σε κίνδυνο σε μία χώρα, αλλά μόνο ένας από αυτούς ήταν προγραμματισμένος να επικοινωνεί με τον Command & Control server που βρισκόταν σε άλλη χώρα.

Ωστόσο, όλα τα θύματα του Regin στην περιοχή ενώθηκαν σε ένα peer-to-peer δίκτυο, που έμοιαζε με δίκτυο VPN, γεγονός που επέτρεπε την μεταξύ τους επικοινωνία.

Έτσι, οι επιτιθέμενοι μετέτρεψαν τους παραβιασμένους οργανισμούς σε ένα πολύ μεγάλο, ενοποιημένο θύμα και ήταν σε θέση να στέλνουν εντολές και να υποκλέπτουν πληροφορίες μέσω ενός και μόνο σημείου εισόδου.

Βάσει της έρευνας της Kaspersky Lab, η δομή αυτή επέτρεψε στον παράγοντα να λειτουργεί αθόρυβα για πολλά χρόνια χωρίς να εγείρει υποψίες.

Το πιο πρωτότυπο και ενδιαφέρον χαρακτηριστικό της πλατφόρμας Regin, όμως, είναι η ικανότητά της να επιτίθεται σε GSM δίκτυα.

Σύμφωνα με ένα αρχείο καταγραφής δραστηριότητας σε έναν ελεγκτή σταθμού βάσης GSM που μελετήθηκε από τους ερευνητές της Kaspersky Lab, οι επιτιθέμενοι ήταν σε θέση να αποκτήσουν στοιχεία πρόσβασης που θα τους επέτρεπαν να ελέγχουν τις κυψέλες GSM του δικτύου μίας μεγάλης εταιρείας κινητής τηλεφωνίας.

Αυτό σημαίνει ότι θα μπορούσαν να έχουν πρόσβαση σε πληροφορίες σχετικά με το ποιες κλήσεις βρίσκονται υπό την επεξεργασία μιας συγκεκριμένης κυψέλης GSM, να ανακατευθύνουν τις κλήσεις σε άλλες κυψέλες, να ενεργοποιούν γειτονικές κυψέλες και να εκτελούν άλλες επιθετικές δραστηριότητες.

Προς το παρόν, οι επιτιθέμενοι πίσω από το Regin είναι οι μόνοι που έχει γνωστό ότι ήταν σε θέση να υλοποιήσουν τέτοιου είδους επιχειρήσεις.

Το Regin αποδεικνύεται ότι είναι μία απειλή με ιδιαίτερα πολύπλοκο και εκλεπτισμένο μηχανισμό που "χτυπάει" και δίκτυα GSM.

Πρόσφατα, η ομάδα CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team) στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες δημοσιοποίησε μία προειδοποίηση για το Regin.

Αρκετοί που είδαν την ανακοίνωση, έσπευσαν να ειρωνευτούν, αφού οι περισσότεροι πιστεύουν ότι πίσω από τον κώδικα του Regin κρύβονται οι υπηρεσίες αντικατασκοπείας των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών ή της Μ.Βρετανίας.

Το πιθανότερο είναι η ομάδα CERT ήθελε να αναγνωρίσει τις ανησυχίες των εταιρειών Symantec και Kaspersky, αν και η κίνηση μοιάζει... κωμική.

Βεβαίως δεν είναι η πρώτη φορά που η ομάδα CERT δημοσιοποιεί προειδοποιήσεις, το έχει κάνει και στην περίπτωση του Stuxnet και του malware με την ονομασία Duqu.

Η Mozilla μαζί με την EFF και άλλες εταιρίες, συνεργάζονται για τη δημιουργία πιστοποιητικών ασφαλείας SSL, τα οποία και θα διαθέσουν δωρεάν.
 
Το πρωτόκολλο SSL (Secure Socket Layers) δημιουργεί μια ασφαλή σύνδεση μεταξύ της ιστοσελίδας και του browser του χρήστη. Τα SSL πιστοποιητικά εξασφαλίζουν την ασφαλή ανταλλαγή δεδομένων ανάμεσα στις δύο πλευρές, αποτρέποντας κακόβουλους χρήστες από την υποκλοπή δεδομένων.
 
Τα SSL πιστοποιητικά παρέχονται από εταιρίες προστασίας δεδομένων και έκδοσης πιστοποιητικών που ονομάζονται Certificate Authorities, και αναλαμβάνουν την ταυτοποίηση των στοιχείων της ιστοσελίδας καθώς και την ασφαλή μεταφορά δεδομένων μεταξύ των ιστοσελίδων αυτών και των χρηστών τους.
 
Αυτές οι εταιρίες παρέχουν τα πιστοποιητικά σε αρκετά υψηλές τιμές, οι οποίες εξαρτώνται από την κωδικοποίηση (256bit ή 128bit), καθώς και το ύψος της εγγύησης που παρέχουν, σε περίπτωση που ο χρήστης ζημιωθεί κατά την περιήγησή του ή μια online αγορά.
 
Ωστόσο το τοπίο αυτό με τις υψηλές τιμές αναμένεται να αλλάξει από το 2015, καθώς η EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) με την Mozilla και το Πανεπιστήμιο του Μίτσιγκαν, καθώς και με την υποστήριξη των κορυφαίων στα δίκτυα, Cisco και Akamai, δημιούργησαν την εταιρία Let’s Encrypt.
  
Η Let’s Encrypt θα είναι μία εταιρία Certificate Authority όπως περιγράψαμε παραπάνω, αλλά με την ουσιαστική διαφορά ότι θα παρέχει τα SSL πιστοποιητικά δωρεάν.
 
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το SSL έχει αντικατασταθεί από το TLS (Transport Layer Security) και η Let’s Encrypt θα παρέχει τα δωρεάν πιστοποιητικά από το καλοκαίρι του 2015, έχοντας να αντιμετωπίσει τις εταιρίες VeriSign/Symantec και Comodo που κατέχουν το 70% της αγοράς.
 
Τέλος, η Let’s Encrypt υπόσχεται πλήρως αυτοματοποιημένη διαδικασία εγκατάστασης.

Η έκδοση της δημοφιλούς σουίτας εφαρμογών Office της Microsoft για υπολογιστές Mac δεν έχει μαζέψει και τις καλύτερες κριτικές, με την εταιρεία να ετοιμάζει μια πλήρως ανανεωμένη έκδοση, αρχής γενομένης από σήμερα.

Έτσι το Outlook για Mac φέρνει ένα εντελώς νέο σχεδιασμό ο οποίος θυμίζει αυτόν της έκδοσης για Windows, ενώ αναμένεται να έχει βελτιωμένες επιδόσεις και αξιοπιστία. Όσον αφορά το γραφικό περιβάλλον της εφαρμογής το οποίο μπορείτε να δείτε στην παρακάτω φωτογραφία, αυτό είναι πιο μοντέρνο με πιο ομαλή μετακίνηση μεταξύ των καρτελών που βρίσκονται στο Ribbon αλλά και καλύτερο scrolling.

Στο αναλυτικό μήνυμα της στο επίσημο blog του Office, η Microsoft δίνει πληροφορίες και για τις υπόλοιπες εφαρμογές που αποτελούν το Office για Mac και συγκεκριμένα το Word, Excel, PowerPoint και OneNote. Αρχικά η εταιρεία προετοιμάζει να κυκλοφορήσει μια δημόσια δοκιμαστική έκδοση αυτών των εκδόσεων το πρώτο εξάμηνο του 2015, με την τελική έκδοση να αναμένεται το δεύτερο εξάμηνο. Όσοι είναι ενεργοί συνδρομητές της cloud υπηρεσίας Office 365 θα μπορούν να κατεβάσουν τις εφαρμογές χωρίς επιπλέον κόστος αν και θα υπάρχει δυνατότητα αγοράς με μια εφάπαξ τιμή.

Τη δυνατότητα Mute, ανακοίνωσε πριν λίγα λεπτά το Twitter, ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά που ζητούσαν επίμονα οι χρήστες από τη δημοφιλή υπηρεσία κοινωνικής δικτύωσης.

Όπως μπορείτε να μαντέψετε, με τη συγκεκριμένη επιλογή, κάθε χρήστης του Twitter μπορεί να επιλέξει ποιανού χρήστη τα tweets που ακολουθεί δεν θα εμφανίζονται στο timeline του. Η επιλογή θα είναι διαθέσιμη σταδιακά από σήμερα όχι μόνο στην web έκδοση του Twitter αλλά και στις επίσημες εφαρμογές για iOS και Android. Αντίστοιχη επιλογή έχουμε δει από εφαρμογές τρίτων κατασκευαστών όπως το Tweetbot το οποίο έχει ενσωματώσει παρόμοια λειτουργία εδώ και αρκετό καιρό.

Υπάρχουν δύο τρόποι ώστε να μην εμφανίζονται τα tweets και τα retweets συγκεκριμένου χρήστη στο timeline σας, ο πρώτος μέσα από το προφίλ του και ο δεύτερος μέσα από το pull down μενού που υπάρχει σε κάθε tweet. Το mute δεν επηρεάζει το "follow" που έχετε κάνει με τον χρήστη αλλά ούτε και τη δυνατότητα να λάβετε DM (προσωπικό μήνυμα) από αυτόν/αυτή.

Σημαντικό στοιχείο επίσης είναι ότι ο χρήστης για τον οποίο επιλέξατε το Mute, ποτέ δε θα ενημερωθεί γι' αυτή σας την ενέργεια και μπορείτε πάντα να την ακυρώσετε χωρίς και πάλι να ενημερωθεί σε αντίθεση με τη λειτουργία Block.

H Symantec πρόσφατα απέλυσε τον CEO της μετά απο δυσμενή οικονομικά αποτελέσματα και εν μέσω εντονότερο ανταγωνισμού.

H Symantec απασχολεί τις τελευταίες ημέρες τα «πρωτοσέλιδα» με αφορμή την δήλωση υψηλόβαθμου στελέχους της στην εφημερίδα Wall Street Journal, o οποίος τόλμησε να πει ότι «το antivirus έχει πεθάνει». Η αμερικανική εταιρεία προσπαθεί τώρα να ξεκαθαρίσει τα πράγματα και να διώξει τις σκιές από πάνω της, διορθώνοντας τρόπον τινά τη δήλωση του Brian Dye, senior vice president for information security στην Symantec, λέγοντας ότι το antivirus έχει πεθάνει καθώς δεν είναι πλέον αρκετό για να προφυλάξει τις μεγάλες επιχειρήσεις από τις σύγχρονες απειλές.

Η Symantec λοιπόν υπόσχεται να προσφέρει στην αγορά μια νέα «Προηγμένη Λύση Προστασίας από Απειλές». Η υλοποίηση θα ξεκινήσει σε πιλοτική/δοκιμαστική βάση εντός έξι μηνών και η γενική διάθεσή της μέσα στους επόμενους 12 μήνες. «Αυτή η καινοτόμος, end-to-end λύση θα προσφέρει ολοκληρωμένη και προηγμένη προστασία από απειλές σε endpoint, e-mail και gateway, παρέχοντας στους πελάτες σημαντικές δυνατότητες εντοπισμού και αντιμετώπισης σε κάθε αντίστοιχο σημείο ελέγχου», λέει η Symantec και εξηγεί: Δύο νέες, καινοτόμες και αναπτυγμένες τεχνολογίες θα ενισχύσουν τις δυνατότητες εντοπισμού και αντιμετώπισης της νέας λύσης. Η «Δυναμική Υπηρεσία Ανάλυσης Κακόβουλου Λογισμικού» είναι ένα cloud-based sandbox περιβάλλον όπου η ανάλυση συμπεριφοράς του ενεργού περιεχομένου μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για γρήγορη μεγιστοποίηση της προσδιορισμού της απειλής, ενώ η τεχνολογία "Synapse", επιτρέπει την ομαλή επικοινωνία μεταξύ του endpoint, του e-mail και του gateway προς διευκόλυνση της βελτιωμένης αντιμετώπισης.

Οι στοχευμένες επιθέσεις αυξάνονται, οι εγκληματίες του κυβερνοχώρου είναι πιο αδίστακτοι από ποτέ και η λύση της πολύπλευρης εξίσωσης που απαιτείται για την προστασία ενάντια των απειλών έχει γίνει πιο δύσκολη από ποτέ. With Office for Mac in limbo and Apple continuing to spoil Pages for the rest of us, I took a risk installing OpenOffice on a newly configured Mac – and may never look back.

Old habits definitely do die hard, which is probably why I have dutifully pulled out the Microsoft Office for Mac (OfM) install disk every time I've reformatted or upgraded one of the many Macs I've set up and kept running over the years.

When recently setting up a new iMac with Mavericks and I couldn't locate that OfM install disk, however, an act of desperation turned into a new modus operandi after I realised that our open-source allies have made the world's most widely used office suite nearly irrelevant.

Microsoft Office may be rusted onto the corporate office worker's psyche, but many Mac users will find OpenOffice just as capable.

There has been a lot of movement in the office-suite market of late, what with Apple releasing Pages, Keynote and Numbers for free; Google Docs popular but still outage-prone; and Microsoft's Office 365 gaining momentum even as the company puts free versions of Office in the cloud to varying effect.

While cloud-based alternatives are getting better all the time, I'm a traditionalist who has used local productivity applications since the days of Wordstar. So, as you can imagine, when I set up a new computer I like to have a writing tool that works whether I'm online or not.

Previous versions of iWork had promise as an alternative, but I have a long-running feud with Apple over iWork for one simple reason: Apple refuses to give it the ability to simply load and save files in Word's .DOC format.

That's right: the only way to handle documents in Pages is by saving your working documents as .pages files – which are, inexplicably, often 10 or more times larger than their Word .DOC equivalent – and then exporting .DOC versions as and when you need them.

If you work with a lot of documents, the double-handling rapidly grates on you. I was hoping to standardise on Pages after hearing about Apple's move to make it free, but Apple is still insisting that we use its own file format to save documents.

Little wonder the business community has been increasingly abandoning Pages and iWork: in the real world – the business world outside Apple's closed-garden ecosystem –absolutely nobody uses the .pages format. Apple's determination to force it down our throats has made its latest iWork iteration less of an Office killer and something more resembling TextEdit on steroids.

At any rate, with Pages out of the question and Office nowhere to be found, I took a chance and revisited the open-source equivalent, OpenOffice, to see if it might allow me to maintain my workflow based on the frequent loading, editing and saving of .DOC files.

OpenOffice has been around for some time, but despite heroic efforts by its developers it has struggled to gain a massive following mainly because Microsoft Office is so broadly available. Business users know Office and have it available to them as a matter of course, while home users probably get it through student bundles or the like.

Mac users, however, have a different decision set. Despite its name, Office for Mac is a rather different productivity suite than Office for Windows – with a different interface and a different feature set. These differences are often significant: it was only with the latest version, for example, that the Mac version of Office was given Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) scripting capabilities after years of conspicuous absence.

Rumour has it that the next version of Office for Mac will bow early next year – prompting many to upgrade, no doubt, even as the memory of now-unsupported Office 2008 fades. But if you can't wait that long – or, like me, you find yourself without an OfM install disk – it's time to give OpenOffice another look.

I had tried it a few versions ago but found it woefully underfeatured as a replacement for OfM. But with its latest iteration (v4.0), OpenOffice is not only extremely quick and easy to use; thanks to ongoing improvements and the contribution of a large volume of code from IBM's Symphony, it's compatible and close enough to Office that you may not even notice you're in the new environment.

Certainly, for someone with very specific requirements – all I need to do is be able to edit documents, save and send .DOC files, and use tools like the highlighter and word counts – OpenOffice ticks all the boxes.

I have found it to be a simple-to-use, capable alternative to Word that costs nothing and offers more than enough features and flexibility that it probably does everything you need it to. It even has Pages' contextual sidebars.

If you have several Macs in the family, this may make OpenOffice not only curious but absolutely compelling because of its much lower cost.

Sure, I've made a few changes: for example, using Mac OS X's application-specific keystrokes I have set up a few keyboard shortcuts for functions like Format Paragraph (Shift-Command-M) and Word Count (if you don't know how to do this, go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Application Shortcuts, then click +, choose your application, enter the unique text of the menu item you want the keystroke to start, and then the keystroke you want to use).

Play around with it and you'll find that the latest OpenOffice gives you more than enough room to stretch your arms and get to work. The spreadsheet and presentation modules are so similar to Excel and PowerPoint – the Mac versions, at least – that you may never know you're not using the real thing.

This is not meant to be a primer on OpenOffice, as much as a reminder that it is still out there, and in its latest iteration it is better than ever.

That may be good news for its authors, since figures suggest that OpenOffice is not exactly burning up the charts; a recent Forrester survey suggested that only 6 percent of companies offer their employees an alternative to Microsoft Office.

As I mentioned earlier, favourable enterprise licensing terms mean most people don't have any need for OpenOffice; recent figures suggest 16 percent of businesses will upgrade to Office 2013 within a year and 20 percent more in the long term.

This is great news for Microsoft and Windows users. But if you're a Mac user who can't or won't buy OfM – or are just looking for an easier and faster productivity option – give it a try. You may find, like I did, that the days of installing massive, monolithic applications are simply over.

Όπως αναμενόταν, η Microsoft έδωσε πριν λίγο τέλος στις φήμες για την παρουσία του Office στο iPad, παρουσιάζοντας σε ειδική εκδήλωση τη δημοφιλή σουίτα εφαρμογών για το πιο δημοφιλές tablet.

Το Office για iPad περιλαμβάνει το Word, Excel και PowerPoint αλλά όχι το Outlook. Και οι τρεις εκδόσεις είναι ειδικά βελτιστοποιημένες για χρήση με την αφή. Μέρος της πολιτικής της εταιρείας, "Cloud για όλους και οποιαδήποτε συσκευή", το Office για iPad είναι διαθέσιμο από σήμερα στο App Store δωρεάν για όσους θέλουν να εμφανίσουν έγγραφα Word, λογιστικά φύλλα Excel και παρουσιάσεις από το PowerPoint. Για τη δημιουργία και την επεξεργασία όμως αυτών των αρχείων ο χρήστης θα πρέπει να διαθέτει συνδρομή στο Office 365, με τη Microsoft να ετοιμάζει να διαθέσει ένα νέο πακέτο συνδρομής με την ονομασία Office 365 Personal.

Midway through the Mavericks installation, my Air shut itself off completely -- no warning or explanation, and it did not start up again until I was forced to manually switch it on, at which point it said it was forced to shut down due to an error. It then resumed and seemed to finish the update, but immediately thereafter shut itself down again, and now will not boot up at all. No chime, no white screen, no response at all -- there's the tiniest, almost inaudible click from inside the machine but otherwise it's as though the power button hasn't been pressed at all. I've tried the SMC reset, etc, still no response.

Until this point, I've not had any problems with the Air at all -- the only hint of anything that's made me frown is that it sometimes reverts to the sleep-mode black screen for a second or after I wake it from sleep. Nothing else at all. I also ran the Mavericks update on my rMBP, and likewise had no trouble with it at all.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

I installed Mavericks on my MBP Early 2011 15" on top of ML latest version. Things went smooth but when using it for work it started to first show strange images in a two screen setup. I restarted an switched off graphics accelerator switch (between integrated and separate graphics card). This worked fine then.
 
Tonight I had a FaceTime call and after a while the system got stuck completely with a black screen. When turning off and restarting the system booted, after showing the Apple logo, and got stuck right a afterwards just showing a white screen.
 
When booting into safe mode, the screen shows blue vertical stripes after a while, stuck too.
Booting into recovery mode does not work either.
 
I am really upset how Apple can create such a poor free upgrade bricking my whole system.

Any ideas?

Bought a good used MBP mid 2010, MC374LL/A, and performed a Mavericks upgrade.  Installation went well and finished sucessfully.  This is the second install of this type I've done with this Mavericks download, so I know its good.  There was one update for iBooks and I let that finish then turned off the machine. 
 
Later when re-starting, I get 9 beeps - 3 short, 3 long, 3 short which is the code for firmware corruption.  I've made a firmware restoration cd following instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213 but I can't get it to work. 
 
What should I do?

The annual Pwn2Own hacking contest has ended with another round of vulnerabilities discovered and exploited in the world’s most used platforms, including Apple’s own Safari web browser, which took a great deal of effort to crack.

China's Keen Team reportedly had to exploit two chained vulnerabilities to successfully compromise the Safari web browser, and declared Apple’s OS X operating system the toughest nut to crack.

Liang Chen of the Keen Team said they used a heap overflow in the Safari Webkit that opened the door to arbitrary code execution, but the bug could not be exploited alone on Apple’s OS X Mavericks. Chen said he had to use a second vulnerability to successfully exploit the browser.

“We utilized another system vulnerability to bypass the sandbox to get a process running in the user’s context,” he said.

According to threatpost.com, the flaws were immediately disclosed to HP’s Zero Day Initiative, a longtime sponsor of the Pwn2Own contest. Apple representatives were also present for the disclosure, according to the report. In other words, the company is now aware of these flaws and will deliver a patch in a future software update.

“I think the Webkit fix will be relatively easy,” Chen said of the flaws. “The system-level vulnerability is related to how they designed the application; it may be more difficult for them.”

Chen also said, “For Apple, the OS is regarded as very safe and has a very good security architecture. Even if you have a vulnerability, it’s very difficult to exploit. Today we demonstrated that with some advanced technology, the system is still able to be pwned. But in general, the security in OS X is higher than other operating systems."

One of the more notable figures present at the event was George Hotz, also known as Geohot. He is the author of the very first iPhone unlock and several subsequent iOS jailbreaks. He got sued by Sony for hacking the PS3, and he has made dozens of headlines thanks to his hacking prowess.

Geohot had a brief stint at Facebook (to our knowledge). He worked as a software engineer for the social network. Hotz got a congratulatory email from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak after the maker of the first Apple computers heard of his feat.

Woz reportedly told The New Yorker in 2012, “It was like a story out of a movie of someone who solves an incredible mystery. I understand the mind-set of a person who wants to do that, and I don’t think of people like that as criminals. In fact, I think that misbehavior is very strongly correlated with and responsible for creative thought.”

The latest iOS 8 leak is out by means of a list containing some of the refinements and tweaks planned by Apple for the next major revision of its mobile operating system. Focus areas include Notification Center, inter-app communication, Voice Memos, Messages, Game Center, and CarPlay.

Notification Center is one of the major elements Apple is looking into for some imminent changes. The sources said the translucent drop-down menu for managing alerts “may be simplified,” and that Apple is considering reducing some views from the panel to only include “Today” and “Notifications.”

Apparently there’s a bit of uncertainty regarding the inclusion of these tweaks in the first builds of iOS 8.

Apple is planning to implement an “XPC” service to enable apps to communicate better with one another and share data: “For example, a future photo editing application could have the ability to push the edited content for upload via the Instagram or Facebook apps.”

The feature was initially planned for iOS 7, but somehow it never made it inside the OS. Apple could just as well delay it again, the sources said.

The Voice Memos app will be enhanced so that its controls become more visible. The confusing interface will be tweaked so that people can understand better what buttons to tap to perform a certain action.

Game Center will be removed as an individual app, but not as a service. Gamers will sill be able to access the interface in games that are made for Game Center. CarPlay will be usable both with a Lightning cable and over WiFi when iOS 8 debuts.

The leak also includes information about the general functionality of the operating system, and how Apple plans to enhance its performance and run faster than iOS 7.

“In addition to the in-app tweaks, Apple has been working to speed up iOS 8 in comparison to iOS 7. Applications are said to launch more quickly, close more quickly, and overall system navigation is said to feel much smoother and more stable. Apple sped up animations and improved stability in the recent release of iOS 7.1, but the enhancements in iOS 8 are said to go a bit further.”

A lot of changes are expected to go down before Apple unveils iOS 8 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference this summer. iOS 8 is also likely to drop support for some old-generation hardware, like the iPhone 4.

iOS 7.1 is packed with interface refinements, bug fixes, improvements, and new features. Apple CarPlay introduces a better way to use iPhone while driving. And you can now control exactly how long Siri listens and more. Getting the update is easy. Go to Settings. Select General. And tap Software Update.

The new iWork applications—Pages, Numbers, and Keynote—were released for Mac on October 22nd. These applications were rewritten from the ground up to be fully 64-bit and to support a unified file format between OS X and iOS 7 versions, as well as iWork for iCloud beta.

Reverting documents created in the new iWork for Mac applications to the previous version’s file format

New or existing documents you open in the new versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote use the new unified file format. These files can’t be opened in the previous versions of the iWork applications. To revert the document file format to the previous version, you can do one of the following:

1. Documents that you haven't edited can be reverted to the iWork ’09 version by selecting File > Revert To.

2. If you have edited the document and want to preserve the edits, you can save it as an iWork ’09 document by selecting File > Export To, then choosing Pages ’09, Numbers ’09, or Keynote ’09.

There has been clarification since this story broke. Adobe has not released the CS2 software for free. Instead, it has cancelled its CS2 license management servers, so for those with existing licenses it is now offering downloads that do not require contact with the licensing servers. Still, they are no longer supported by the company and could cause problems or fail to run when installed on computers running the latest versions of OS X or Windows.

Nevertheless, if you have an older computer or have virtual-machine software configured with an older operating system compatible with CS2, then you should be able to get CS2 running. Unfortunately for Mac users, CS2 is a PowerPC application, so it will require the use of either an Intel Mac running OS X 10.4 through 10.6 with the Rosetta translator installed, or the use of an older PowerPC Mac.

The only versions of the OS X client that Apple supports in virtualization are those that do not include the Rosetta translator (OS X 10.7 and higher) which is required for running older PowerPC code on an Intel-based Mac. Therefore, while you can either virtualize the Server versions of OS X 10.6 (which is rather expensive and no longer available) or earlier, or hack virtualization software to allow installation of the OS X 10.6 client, the best option for current Mac users is to perhaps configure a Windows XP virtual machine and install the Windows version of CS2.

The CS2 download requires you to first get an Adobe account and a CS2 license, then download the installer from the CS2 downloads page.

Η Ρωσική Elcomsoft ανακοίνωσε τη διάθεση του Elcomsoft Forensic Disk Decryptor (EFDD), ενός νέου προγράμματος αποκρυπτογράφησης που μπορεί να ξεκλειδώσει κρυπτογραφήσεις BitLocker, PGP και TrueCrypt στα Windows.

Το EFDD μπορεί να "σπάσει" τις πιο πάνω μεθόδους κρυπτογράφησης, σε 32 και 64 bit εκδόσεις των Windows XP, Vista και Windows 7, καθώς και των Windows 2003 και Windows Server 2008.

Στις δυνατότητες του EFDD συγκαταλέγεται η πλήρης ή επιλεκτική πρόσβαση σε κρυπτογραφημένες πληροφορίες, αφού μπορεί να ξεκλειδώσει συγκεκριμένα αρχεία σε πραγματικό χρόνο. Μπορεί επίσης να αποκρυπτογραφήσει όλα τα αρχεία που είναι αποθηκευμένα σε ένα συγκεκριμένο partition ή δίσκο, και να τα παρέχει για άμεση πρόσβαση σε έναν "νέο" εικονικό δίσκο στα Windows για άμεση πρόσβαση.

Ένα ακόμη σημαντικό στοιχείο είναι πως το EFDD δεν αφήνει ίχνη, αφού δεν κάνει την παραμικρή αλλαγή ή τροποποίηση στο αρχικό περιεχόμενο.

Η εφαρμογή Facebook Messenger για iOS μόλις αναβαθμίστηκε με την προσθήκη νέας λειτουργίας για την αποστολή ηχογραφημένων φωνητικών μηνυμάτων στους χρήστες του κοινωνικού δικτύου.

Αποκλειστικά για τους χρήστες iOS του Καναδά η αναβάθμιση περιλαμβάνει (δοκιμαστικά) και δυνατότητα πραγματοποίησης δωρεάν VoIP κλήσεων μέσω WiFi ή 3G, η οποία καλώς εχόντων των πραγμάτων θα είναι σύντομα διαθέσιμη και στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο.

Παρόλο που αυτή τη στιγμή υπάρχουν δεκάδες εφαρμογές που κάνουν λίγο πολύ το ίδιο (WhatsApp, Viber, Skype κ.α.), αυτοί που χρησιμοποιούν το Facebook είναι σαφώς πολύ περισσότεροι. Η νέα λειτουργία θα είναι το κερασάκι στην τούρτα για τους παρόχους κινητής τηλεφωνίας οι οποίοι μάλιστα στο παρελθόν έχουν ζητήσει από τις Google, Apple και Facebook να πληρώνουν για τη χρήση των δικτύων τους.

Επιπλέον, τον περασμένο μήνα ακούστηκαν έντονες φήμες ότι η Facebook σχεδιάζει να εξαγοράσει την δημολέστατη εφαρμογή messaging WhatsApp, ενώ πρόσφατα η εταιρεία προχώρησε σε συμφωνία με τη γαλλική πάροχο Orange για τη δημιουργία μιας νέας υπηρεσίας  “κοινωνικών κλήσεων” μέσω του Facebook ονόματι Party Call.

Στις 11 Απριλίου του 2011 το αμερικανικό Υπουργείο Δικαιοσύνης έκλεισε τις τρεις μεγαλύτερες ιστοσελίδες poker των ΗΠΑ, κατηγορώντας 11 ανθρώπους για απάτη προς τις τράπεζες, ξέπλυμα χρήματος και παράνομο τζόγο. Το αποτέλεσμα ήταν όλοι οι λογαριασμοί να παγώσουν και οι online παίκτες να χάσουν τα χρήματά τους μέσα σε μια νύχτα.

Προκειμένου λοιπόν να παρακάμψουν τη νομοθεσία, οι ιστοσελίδες τυχερών παιχνιδιών βρήκαν τη λύση στο διαδικτυακό νόμισμα Bitcoin, το οποίο δε συνδέεται με τραπεζικούς λογαριασμούς, διακινείται ανώνυμα μέσα από ένα δίκτυο P2P και καμία αρχή ή κυβέρνηση δεν έχει πρόσβαση στις συναλλαγές. Επιπλέον, οι τελευταίες πραγματοποιούνται ταχύτατα μέσα σε λίγες μόνο ώρες, σε αντίθεση με τις τράπεζες που συνήθως απαιτούν μέχρι και 12 εβδομάδες.

Το κατά πόσο βέβαια η μη εμπλοκή των τραπεζών καθιστά τις ιστοσελίδες τυχερών παιχνιδιών νόμιμες παραμένει ένα δύσκολο ερώτημα και όπως όλα δείχνουν σύντομα οι αρμόδιοι φορείς θα κληθούν να λάβουν αποφάσεις…
